Facts and figures

There are several excellent sources for statistics on Israel and the Occupied Territories. However, you are likely to find  discrepancies between sources, especially when it comes to population demographics such as the number of settlers, number of Palestinians broken down by those living in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza etc.

The United Nations Development Programme produces the Human Development Report annually. In the 2007/2008 report, Israel has the 23rd highest human development index, a function of life expectancy, literacy, educational attainment and per capita GDP.  The Occupied Territories occupy position 101 above countries like Indonesia, Egypt and South Africa, but below Jordan, Algeria and Vietnam. The report contains many useful statistics with Israel within the Green (plus settlers) dealt with separately from the Occupied Territories (West Bank and Gaza).

The World Health Organisation WHOSIS database is detailed and free. However it does not appear to give statistics for the Occupied Territories.

Btselem is an Israeli Human Rights group known for its high-quality research. It exposes human rights abuses by all sides in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The same is true for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI).

Believe it or not, the CIA World Factbook is detailed, accurate and, for the most part, free of rhetoric and politics. The entries on Israel, West Bank and Gaza are excellent and well worth reading.
